Toys & Teens Appeal 2016
Reading Family Aid’s Toys & Teens Appeal has now finished for 2016, and we are over the moon to report that it’s been another hugely successful year! Thanks to the immense generosity of the people of Reading, this year we were able to give gifts to 1,350 children from over 600 local families, helping to put a smile on disadvantaged children’s faces this Christmas.
We had 31 donation points situated all over the Reading area, collecting toys from the general public during the period 20 October – 5 December. In addition to this, a record number of businesses, offices, schools, faith and social groups organised their own collections. All in all we estimate we received around 10,000 quality toy donations! Simply amazing!
With the help of 150 volunteers (including the Mayor and an MP!) and a team of 14 van men to collect, sort and pack up the toys, we were able to ensure the gifts were delivered to families, via their social workers, health visitors etc. in time for Christmas.
We have had some feedback already: “I have just had my delivery of gifts and have had a look through the bags before I pass them on to parents. As ever, I am astounded by the generosity of the donations. These gifts are going to children, for whom very little else is going well in their lives at the moment. Thank you to you and your wonderful organisation for the wonderful work that you do.” Jenny Clarke, Family Support Worker, Christ The King Catholic Primary School
“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the toys this year. The guys that delivered them were lovely and the presents are to such a high standard! The parents and children will be thrilled with them!” Lara Finchen, Learning Mentor, Geoffrey Field Junior School
Reading Family Aid Chair, Wendy Howell comments: “We were absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Reading this year. Thanks to the support of each and every individual, company, school, faith and social group who donated to the Toys & Teens appeal we were able to provide over 1300 local children with quality gifts in time for Christmas. We are also hugely thankful for the support of our sponsors, to all of the many Donation Points for taking in the toy donations, and to the many many volunteers, whose help during the toy packing week was absolutely essential. We wish everyone a very Happy Christmas!”
For the rest of the year, if funds permit, Reading Family Aid provides outings for children and their families who couldn’t afford to go otherwise. This December we are taking 140 children to Reading’s Hexagon Theatre to see the pantomime, trips to Chessington World of Adventures for 230 children, Odds Farm Park and Camp Mohawk are also planned for 2017.
Thank you to each and every one of our supporters! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2017!
